How do I know if I need therapy?
These days, terms like “self-care” and “mental health” are incredibly common, and there are no shortage of experts telling us how important they are if we want to lead happy and prosperous lives. So common do we hear this, in fact, that we tend to get desensitised to the message and making time for ourselves still somehow falls to the bottom of our priorities.
I often get asked, “How do I know if I need therapy?” In short, I’d say it depends on how much time you feel stuck in particular thoughts, or experiencing deep feelings that you’re finding hard to explain or identify. We all have days like this, and if something has happened in life that’s important to you, it might last a few days, but usually it fades.
However, if you start finding yourself distracted often, and detached from the things and the people around you on a continual basis, this could be a sign that something bigger is going on. It’s possible that you might not even know why you’re not feeling yourself, but if something feels off for an ongoing period of time, this is when I recommend you consider talking to someone.
The chances are what you’re experiencing is temporary, and that having a dedicated therapist giving you their undivided attention will help you highlight what’s going on and explore ways to navigate your way out of it pretty quickly. It just depends on whether the self-help routines you have in place are doing a good enough job at keeping you balanced, or if you feel you need a little extra support to get there.
My advice is if you feel like your life has been interrupted somehow, and if you’re finding it hard to move forward, then this is the perfect time to reach out to a therapist and arrange a consultation call. Feel free to contact me if I can be of help.
